What You Can Do Become a Counselor The need for services for all of our projects is constantly growing. Call us if you would like to apply to participate in the next training. We are especially seeking people of color, military veterans, recent veterans, military families, and GLBTQ people. Qualities we seek in potential counselors include empathy, ability to listen well, ability deal with detailed information, and ability to work cooperatively with other members of our counseling community. Counselors who work through email also need good writing skills. We ask counselors to commit to counsel at least two hours a week for at least a year and to participate in trainings.
Do Outreach Last year alone the GI Rights hotline responded to almost 40,000 calls from people in the military and their families and friends. But there are many who never have the opportunity to use our services because they don't know about them. We need people who can help spread the word by passing out cards, contacting websites, sharing emails, distributing information about the network and helping to develop new graphic and written materials.
Do Research It's important that counselors are aware of changes in regulations, practices, veterans services, support organizations, etc. You can contribute by helping to identify and maintain this information and make it accessible to AMIE counselors and others,
Help Us Stay Organized Even the simplest organization has a certain level of paperwork and files that have to be maintained, as well as financial information that need to be kept up to date. Perhaps you would want to help us create or maintain systems to do this.
Fundraising We have expenses for the telephone, trainings, office supplies, the website, etc. You could write a grant, hold a house party, ask your friends and colleagues to donate, work on (or even produce) an event to raise funds to support this work.
Identify your Skills and Resources Let us know what your skills are-- chances are that together we can find a way for you to make a unique contribution to the work. |
